Petrol Prices
Just received an interesting E-Mail;
Now usually, anything with lots of peoples addresses in the ‘to:’ field and ‘FW:’ in the subject goes directly into the bin.
But this one caught me out, have a read.. see what you think:
—————————————————————————————–
THE BASIC IDEA:
For the rest of this year DON’T purchase ANY petrol from the two biggest oil companies (which now are one), ESSO and BP.
If they are not selling any petrol, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit. But to have an impact we need to reach literally millions of Esso and BP petrol buyers. It’s really simple to do!!

—————————————————————————————–
We are hitting 98p a litre in some areas now, soon we will be faced with paying £1 a ltr. Philip Hollsworth offered this good idea:
This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the ‘don’t buy petrol on a certain day campaign that was going around last April or May! The oil companies just laughed at that because they knew we wouldn’t continue to hurt ourselves by refusing to buy petrol. It was more of an inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them. BUT, whoever thought of this idea has come up with a plan that can really work.
Please read it and join in!
Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us to think that the cost of a litre is CHEAP, we need to take aggressive action to teach them that BUYERS control the market place not sellers. With the price of petrol going up more each day, we consumers need to take action. The only way we are going to see the price of petrol come down is if we hit someone in the pocket by not purchasing their Petrol! And we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves. Here’s the idea:
For the rest of this year DON’T purchase ANY petrol from the two biggest oil companies (which now are one), ESSO and BP.

Now, don’t wimp out on me at this point… keep reading and I’ll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people!!
I am sending this note to a lot of people. If each of you send it to at least ten more (30 x 10 = 300)… and those 300 send it to at least ten more (300 x 10 = 3,000) … and so on, by the time the message reaches the sixth generation of people, we will have reached over THREE MILLION consumers! If those three million get excited and pass this on to ten friends each, then 30 million people will have been contacted! If it goes one level further, you guessed it… ..
THREE HUNDRED MILLION PEOPLE!!!
Again, all You have to do is send this to 10 people. That’s all. (And not buy at ESSO/BP) How long would all that take? If each of us sends this email out to ten more people within one day of receipt, all 300 MILLION people could conceivably be contacted within the next 8 days!!! Acting together we can make a difference. If this makes sense to you, please pass this message on.
PLEASE HOLD OUT UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES TO THE 69p a LITRE RANGE
It’s easy to make this happen. Just forward this email, and buy your petrol at Shell, Asda,Tesco, Sainsburys, Morrisons, Jet, etc.

Ok, So he/she rambles on about basic maths way to much in the e-mail.. but he may be onto something here. Who knows if it would actually work, but the idea is solid.
Only one other thing that needs mentioning.. reasearch is needed;
As asda/tesco’s/sainsbury’s/other supermarkets do not have their own refinery.. SOMEONE has to be providing them the petrol.
Turns out, Tesco is supplied by ESSO.. so 30 Million people stopping buying petrol at BP/ESSO and instead getting it as tesco’s.. isnt going to hurt them a single bit :P
And if Tesco are, other supermarket’s / small garages probably are too… Find other suppliers though, and give it a try..
Sounds like a plan!

I think this is just of the many hoax chain letter type e-mails that regularly do the rounds.
Derek: Maybe, but I think unlike most, there may be some truth to this one!

What’s the point if BP/Esso supply the supermarkets?
Matt: They don’t supply all supermarkets, shell supply quite a few, and you just would not use the BP/Esso supplied stations.
This email was probably originated by some clever thinking director at Shell… :p
Having read this I wondered if you are interested in a map I have showing petrol prices in any area of the UK. It relies on users to submit the prices.
Take a look at http://www.whatgas.com and let me know what you think, we are now letting people feature this map on their own website if they like!
What’s the point? It’s the government that take over 70% in taxes and VAT from the fuel price we pay. Plus Esso and BP are global companies i.e. if they don’t sell the fuel here they’ll sell it in Europe or America. This guy clearly hasn’t thought this through or does indeed work for Shell….
If you think it will make a difference, have a look at this. http://www.snopes.com/politics/gasoline/gasout.asp
Please do not contribute to the ever-growing avalanche of chain mail in cyberspace
Matt: Unless wordpress secretly mails all blog posts to everyone on the internet, adding ‘pass this on or x will happen’ .. I didn’t realize I was contributing to chain mail ;P
Didn’t think it would make a difference at all, but it’s up here to get opinions from other people.
And as for snopes: http://xkcd.com/250/
lol!

Errrm…
1. BP/Esso aren’t one. Esso is the brand name of Imperial Oil.
2. BP is about 2nd/3rd biggest publically traded oil company (depends on the metrics you use). Imperial Oil is somewhat down the rankings. Exxon Mobil is by far the biggest.
3. As already stated here - There are 9 refinaries in the UK, all majority owned by the main oil companies (http://www.og.dti.gov.uk/downstream/refining/index.htm). So it’s a good bet that all pumps are supplied by them.
4. Labour and Tory govenrments have hiked fuel tax for many years now in an effort to get us out of cars and into public transport. Unfortunately they don’t seem to realise that public transport sucks, which is why we don’t want to use it.
5. Price per barrel of crude is dictated by supply/demand. Demand is ever increasing thanks largely to the ever guzzling USA and now China as well. Supply could probably be increased a little at the moment, but by a lot if the security situations in Iraq and Nigeria were to be sorted out.
To Simon - January 31st. Actually, Esso is the international brand name of ExxonMobil used outside the US. Imperial Oil, which is 70% owned by ExxonMobil operate Esso stations only in Canada. Nope, it’s just to get more of our money out of our pockets. And it’s working too.
